What Aggregate Is Needed for an ATAR Above 90? (HSC and VCE)

What scores do you need to get a high ATAR? In this article, we cover the aggregates required (in NSW and Victoria) to get an ATAR of 85, 90, and 99.95.

Aggregate to ATAR - we've crunched the numbers!

If you're reading this article, chances are that you're already an expert on the ATAR system, and know exactly how the ATAR works. You are also likely aware of how the ATAR is calculated, and that it is based on the aggregate score that you receive. But what is the aggregate that maps onto your target ATAR? In this article, we examine the threshold aggregates that you would need to get an ATAR of 85, 90 and 99.95, respectively.

The ATAR [...] is based on the aggregate that you receive. But what is the aggregate that maps onto your target ATAR?

What aggregate is required for an ATAR of 85? (NSW/VIC)

NSW

In NSW in 2020, the aggregate required for an 85 ATAR was just above 340.

This corresponds to an average scaled score per unit of 34 across 10 units (including two English units).

VIC

In Victoria in 2020, the VCE study score aggregate required to achieve an 85 ATAR was just over 146  (check out this article for more information on how the ATAR system works).

For example, four scaled study scores of 35 (including an English subject) and two scaled study scores of 31 (each contributing a 3.1 increment) yielded an aggregate of 146.2 and an ATAR of 85.

What aggregate is required for an ATAR of 90? (NSW/VIC)

NSW

In NSW in 2020, the minimum aggregate required to score an ATAR of 90 or above was approximately 370, corresponding to an average scaled score of 37 per unit across 10 units.

If you are looking to achieve this score in your HSC, you might want to explore our different NSW tutoring options, including our online tutoring in Sydney.

VIC

In Victoria in 2020, the minimum aggregate needed to score an ATAR of 90 or above was approximately 157.

For example, an average scaled study score of 37.5 in the top four subjects and an average scaled study score 35 in the bottom two subjects would have yielded an ATAR of approximately 90.20.

Achieving an aggregate of 157 is obviously very challenging, if you need help, you may want to consider some of our Victorian tutoring solutions.

What aggregate is required for an ATAR of 99.95? (NSW/VIC)

NSW

In NSW, the minimum aggregate required to score an ATAR of 99.95 or above is approximately 476.

This corresponds to an average scaled score of just under 48/50 per unit across 10 units.

VIC

In Victoria, the minimum aggregate needed to score an ATAR of 99.95 is approximately 210.

An aggregate of 210 corresponds to scaled study scores of 50 in all six subjects (including increments of 5.0 in the bottom two subjects), but some students may score even higher than this due to the scaling of certain subjects enabling study scores well over 50. This is obviously very challenging to achieve, and many of the students who do achieve such a high score in school have the assistant of an academic coach or an online tutor.
